Malala Yousafzai
Who is Malala?
A young woman who is known for her valor and powerful voice. Malala Yousafzai is
a female activist who stood up for justice, education, freedom, human rights and self
determination. She was born to Thorpekai and Ziauddin Yousafzai on July 12th, 1997 in
Mingora, Pakistan. Malala was born into a family that extremely appreciated and
valued community service and education. This
was one of the reasons she was influenced to
become an advocate for girl’s education in her
early years. Malala was nominated for the
Nobel Peace Prize where her efforts went in
vain (2013). Malala was nominated once again
where she won and became the youngest
person to ever be awarded with the Nobel
Peace Prize (2014).
Malala displays these following leadership styles as a successful young leader:
Inspirational:
Malala was an inspiring person as she self-sacrificed solely for the restriction of
females rights and education. She provided support for the young girls who were
afraid of the Taliban Conflict to stay strong willed and brave. Malala was shot in
the head where she surprisingly recovered and got back on her feet. Malala never
gave up despite her atrocious attack and still continued to fight for what she took a
stand in. Her keen dedication and inspirational features can be shown clearly in this
text, “His daughter Malala chose not to give into her fears, but to overcome them by
setting an example” (Ziauddin Yousafzai, 2009). For instance, the popularity of her
blog enabled the Pakistani military force to take proper action and defend the region
where the Taliban’s attack was taking place. “They cannot stop me; I will get my
education if it is in home, school or any place.” (Malala Yousafzai, January 2009)
Malala's self-confidence and determination to receive education was very high;
where she would never give up despite the consequences she would face by
disobeying the Talibans rules. She created herself as the vision in the eyes of many
people because of her bravery and courage and that is why we consider Malala as
an inspirational person.
Determination:
Malala’s self-determination and her confidence to achieve her goal were the key
aspects that enabled her to strive throughout the Taliban conflict. Some observers
say, “Taliban was afraid of Malala because she was not afraid of them”. In saying
this, it proves that Malala is a true leader and that she accomplished what she was
determined to do which was to bring a change to the region where women would be
offered with education rights and justice. Malala never refused to ever give up on this
life changing challenge despite the death threats she was given. She herself said “I
have a new dream . . . I must be a politician to save this country. There are so many
crises in our country. I want to remove these crises” (Summer, 2009), when her father
encouraged and influenced her to become one later on in life. However, Malala
realised that she could use her intelligence and opinion to bring change in the
situation and actions of the Taliban’s injustices and harm. Malala Yousafzai served
and fought against the limited education rights provided for females. We believe that
Malala is a strong, young willed person who takes up an opportunity to fight for her
rights and never gives up despite the end of her life.
Courageous:
Malala is a courageous young woman who was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman
in the Swat Valley as consequence of promoting “secularism” (October, 2012). The
Taliban militants imposed limits on women’s rights, where education was forbidden
and as consequences - public beating and in extreme cases, killings for anyone who
disobeyed. Considering the fact that Malala did step over the line in their view she
was still determined to continue her stand in order for justice for female’s education
and rights. Malala ran a campaign for girls’ rights to education in the Swat Valley.
The teenager attended school during this horrific time where she fearlessly followed
in her father's steps and valiantly spoke out in public. She realised that she could use
her wise words, her knowledge and actions to bring a change. By doing this she
showed her courage to face the talibans. Malala has set an excellent example to those
who are too afraid of fighting for ones right. She has overcome her fears and taken a
stand in what she believes in no matter what obstacles there are in her way. Malala
has the courage to face anything and everything she puts her mind to.
What Type Of Leader Is Malala?
Malala can be categorized as a charismatic leader according to the qualities and traits
she possesses. She has the courage to fight, the determination to make a change and
is an inspirational person to everyone in a positive way which led to a positive
outcome. Malala being a Charismatic leader had the confidence and faith in her
abilities to encourage and help build confidence in others during the Talibans conflict.
Malala faced and overcame her fears by being brave and standing up for her rights
she and the others deserved as young girls. Most charismatic leaders are recognised as
caring for others needs before their very own as they do not show self-importance to
themselves. Malala has shown this where she fought for the limitation placed on
female education rights despite the risk and consequences she had to face. She has
shown charisma since her childhood, where under her father’s observations, she was
noticed as a natural young leader among her peers where she was comfortable to
share her views and opinions where she considered the needs of others before her own
too. She is a determined person because she achieved what she rightfully desired to do
and this an outcome rewarded her hard work, bravery and potential where she is
globally notable for her triumph.
Consequences:
- Being too determined Malala meant her “overdoing” something which once again
resulted in a bullet to her head
- Being courageous Malala had to face the Taliban's attack
- Malala is an inspirational leader where the consequences of being one resulted in
the danger of her life. She was shot in the head for promoting secularism
